Promoting the Public Welfare: Reassessing the Role of Philanthropy and Government

Our next session will feature Cecilia Muñoz and Xavier de Souza Briggs in discussion with our CEO, Sampriti Ganguli. Together, they will explore questions about the proper roles of government and philanthropy, and how each can—and should—bolster the capacity of the other to provide for the public good.

While the pandemic has pointed up shortcomings in our governmental institutions, it has also highlighted their critical importance. Meanwhile, increasing political polarization has undermined public trust in government, hindering its capacity and effectiveness and undermining the stability of our democracy. How can philanthropy not only serve as a stopgap for governmental failures, but help restore public trust in government and its capacity to address society’s most important challenges and problems? Join us to explore these topics and more.

Improving America’s Eviction Data

Nearly 3 million Americans are evicted each year, and experts estimate that number may grow tenfold due to the economic fallout of COVID-19. Yet, in the midst of an unprecedented national eviction crisis, data about evictions is so poor that we don’t know who is losing their homes where, and how to focus aid and outreach. One third of all U.S. counties lack annual eviction figures, to say nothing of information on which neighborhood evictions are happening in, how eviction rates change over time, and who is most at risk.

To solve America’s eviction crisis, we need better data.

Please join New America, the National League of Cities and Stanford Legal Design Lab to probe the challenges of poor eviction data, showcase what happens when we have this data, and chart a path towards improving our local and national eviction data systems.

Immigration, Racial Justice & Public Policy: Assessing Biden’s First 100 Days

In this webinar, PRICE tackles some of the biggest and most pressing issues in U.S. politics. As we've moved into a new presidential administration, what has President Biden done (or failed to do) to advance racial justice? How has the administration addressed the dysfunctional and destructive U.S. immigration system? What does the first 100 days of the Biden Administration tell us about what is to come and about the trajectory of U.S. democracy?

This event is being organized as part of the Belnick Family LaFeber/Lowi Presidential Forum, which honors the teaching and scholarship of Professors Walter LaFeber and Theodore Lowi. It seeks to foster student engagement within American politics and supports programming around each U.S. presidential election to encourage public engagement with the core issues facing the United States and the world.
